What is Yoga?

Oxygen Training :: Hot Yoga and Hot Pilates Classes in Maple Ridge and Port CoquitlamYoga is all about relationships. The relationship you have with yourself, people in your life and with the world around you. It's all about connection.

What are all those strange words and what's with the chanting? Let's take a look at the history of Yoga and why people practice Yoga. The word "Yoga" derives from the Sanskrt word "Yuj" which means to "connect", and can also mean "union". Sanskrit is the language of ancient India, where Yoga originated. Think of the "union" occurring between the mind, body and spirit. Yoga, an ancient philosophy, promotes personal health, growth and wellness. Yoga is not a religion, but has impact on our spiritual path.

Most modern forms are traced back to the yoga Sutras, which was written by Patanjal, an ancient philosopher from around 500 BC. A lot of people think that Yoga is a type of exercise, but actually, Yoga is more than that. Yoga is a way of life. Its aim is to create union of the body, mind and spirit through asanas (yoga poses or postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation. Yoga has recently become popular in the Western world, especially with medical practitioners and therapists, as treatments for a large variety of physical and emotional illnesses.

Who can benefit from Yoga?

You do not need to be a contortionist to practice Yoga. Yoga is not just for young people who are thin and supple. You do not need to be flexible to practice Yoga. All you need is dedication and patience. I love my Yoga practice because it promotes greater flexibility and strength, and also creates greater mental clarity and focus. Yoga involve concentration, focused breathing, and discipline. A greater union of mind, body, and spirit is the result of practicing yoga and anyone regardless of age, experience, body type, or physical abilities can practice yoga.
